Glurns (Giorenza in Italian) lies in the Val Venosta in the Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Among the city's most remarkable features are its well-conserved fortress walls that divide Glurns into an inner and an outer city. Glurns was a travel junction already in Roman times, when the Via Claudia Augusta led to the tiny city.
Glurns is the smallest city in the Alps - some would say, in the world. It is a place full of surprises and historical treats. The city wall has remained wonderfully intact with its imposing defense towers, medieval alleys and arched passageways. Along with the picturesque mountain scenery that surrounds it, Glurns has a character and a charm of its very own.
This is where the Germanic north and the Italian south meet - obvious in the population's features, the city's architecture and its food. The influence of nearby Switzerland is evident as well. In all, Glurns is a colorful and lively little place that is ideal for Romantics and realists alike.
