Merano is the second-largest city in South Tyrol after the region's capital, Bolzano. It lies in a basin surrounded by mountains (1,500–3,335 m.a.s.l.), at the mouth of the Passeier Valley, the Vinschgau (Val Venosta in Italian) and the Ultental (Val d'Ultimo). It was already frequented as a spa resort in the 19th Century.
The ultimate highlight for all visitors with a green thumb or a general love of plants is a visit to the splendid gardens at Trauttmansdorff Castle (picture). The 8.5-hectare expanse that was opened to the public in 2001 is a whole universe of plants combined into one botanic garden. 80 islands of plants line a network of walking paths almost 7 kilometers long. The gardens are home to some 5,400 different species and varieties, and over 450,000 individual plants in total.
Another highlight of every stay in Merano is a visit to the new thermal baths right at the city center (picture). Its interior was designed by the famous South Tyrolean architect, Matteo Thun.
