Val Müstair is one of Switzerland's most picturesque mountain valleys. Its unique natural landscape has remained entirely untouched, and the quaint villages have retained their original character throughout the decades.
The most famous sight to see in the Munster Valley is St. John's Convent (picture). Legend has it that, after his coronation as King of the Lombards in 774, Charlemagne lost his way in a snowstorm but survived. As a figurine in the church portrays, he endowed the convent in Müstair as a sign of gratitude. Founded as a monastery, it has been a nun's convent since the 12th Century; today, twelve Benedictine nuns live here. In 1983 St. John's Convent was recognized as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Convent life is a unique mixture of everyday household tasks, conserving the cultural heritage, running a museum, and carrying out research and restoration work.
