Vicenza is a city of art and industry with a population of around 110,000. It lies in the Veneto region at around 60 kilometers northwest of Venice and 200 kilometers east of Milan. The city is famous for its jewelry and clothing industries that for example gave birth to the clothing specialists, Dainese. Vicenza's Gold Exposition is world-famous and is held three times a year - in January, June and September. Vicenza is one of the wealthiest cities in Italy.
The city is home to numerous Palazzi dating from the 15th to the 18th Centuries. The most famous ones were built by Andrea Palladio (picture: statue of Palladio). Of all the sights, the most noteworthy are the Palladian Villas of the Veneto (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage). The Teatro Olimpico, the only free-standing post-antiquity theater in Europe, is another masterpiece by Palladio.
The city center is dominated by its main square, the Piazza dei Signori. The Basilica with the Loggia as its most remarkable feature is not a basilica in the classical sense of the term - however its builder chose to call it such after the ancient style. A tower rises above the square - the Torre di Piazza - that is almost 80 meters high and was built in the 12th Century. by Wikipedia
