Tips

Package tours

Railtour and other tour operators will help you to plan your trip and make all ticket and hotel bookings for you. As several different railways and destinations are involved, direct bookings require substantial time and patience. We strongly recommend you take advantage of Railtour's service to get you off to a leisurely start.

Timetables

www.sbb.ch. For timetables between Venice and St. Moritz please enter the city names spelt exactly as follows: "St. Moritz" and "Venezia-Santa Lucia" via "Malles".

Stopovers and refreshments

The route's scenic beauty and its cultural treasures warrant at least one overnight stop somewhere along the way. If you do decide to take the tour in a day, we advise you take a light bag with snacks and refreshments along with you.

Climate

Venice is located at sea level, directly by the sea. The average annual temperature in Venice is just under 14 °C. The warmest months are July and August with an average of 23 °C and peaks above 30 °C. The coldest month is January with an average of 3 °C. St. Moritz, on the other hand, lies at 1,856 m.a.s.l. in the Swiss Alps. Its "sparkling dry Champagne climate" is legendary, and the famous St. Moritz sun shines on average 322 days a year. In winter, daytime temperatures of -10 °C and below are no exception, and in summer the thermometer will peak at around 27 °C in July and August. Its high altitude warrants taking some warm clothing with you, in particular as rapid weather changes with a drop in temperature may occur. For up-to-date weather reports please visit the section Current -> Weather.

Travel periods

The Tour can be taken daily throughout the entire year. The "best" time of the year for your visit depends on your own personal interests and preferences alone. In St. Moritz, the winter season usually lasts from late November to late April. During the summer high season (July and August), hotels in both Venice and St. Moritz tend to be well booked. If making your own bookings, we recommend you contact the local tourist offices as soon as possible to inquire about accommodation.

Currency

The official currency in Italy (including South Tyrol) is the Euro. Although the Euro is widely accepted in Switzerland, we suggest you take along some Swiss Francs for your journey as well.

Luggage

Restrict your luggage to a minimum and opt for a trolley that is easy to pull and stow away. In Italy, the railway stations at Venice-Santa Lucia, Padova, Verona and Merano currently offer luggage deposit. The Venice-St. Moritz Tour is endeavoring to convince the Italian authorities to expand the service, which has been restricted for security reasons.
